How to match your values with a companies culture

Matching your values with a companies culture can ensure you gain employment with the right company. When we recruit at R2R People, we build relationships with our clients and take the time to understand their organisational culture. We then find people who align with their culture, ensuring longevity and happy working relationships.

We recommend that you weigh up the following points when assessing the fit between your values and organisational culture:

-Workspace/ office environment

-Teamwork/ team strength

-Professional development opportunities

-Career progression opportunities

-Internal competition

-Management structure

-Staff incentives

-Support that is available to staff

Much of the above can be discovered online, in the job description, or at the initial interview stage. Take into account which of the above is most important to you personally and score the company against this list in order of what you value the highest.

Take an in-depth look at the companies website and social media pages to give you an insight into how they communicate. They will showcase the best-bits attractively but this should give you an insight into their mission and values. It may also demonstrate how they portray internal activities.

Another characteristic to consider when researching your next employer is how decisions are made within the company. Understanding the decision-making process can give you a clear indicator of how much influence you may have. This will be a highly important factor for some people, especially those in management roles.

Behind the scenes research

Use LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and other forms of social media and try to connect with people from the company and get their perspective on the companies culture. If this feels too invasive, you could ask a friend or past employee that has worked for the company. The following questions should be considered:

-How would you describe the company in three words?

-What do you like most about the company?

-Are you encouraged to do extracurricular training and development?

-Do you feel you can bring any concerns to management?

Once you have all of the information, carefully consider which factors are the most important to you. This should highlight whether or not your values align with the organisation.
